5 steps to the best muesli

nutritionist sydney healthy muesli recipe

Following on from my post How to choose a healthy muesli, this is for those of you adventurous folk who want to take the next step and create your own homemade muesli. This is the absolsutely BEST way to get the most nourishing and wholesome bowl to start your day.

Start with these 5 steps to create the best muesli:
1. Choose a base: rolled oats, spelt, rye or barley or for a gluten free option try flaked quinoa

2. Add some crunch: raw nuts, sunflower seeds, pepitas, sesame seeds, roasted or dehydrated buckwheat.

3. Need a bit of sweetness: goji berries, flaked coconut, ground cinnamon or vanilla.

4. Give it a fibre boost: psyllium husks, LSA or flax meal.

5.Top it with super goodness: sprinkle your favourite superfoods on top…bee pollen, maca powder or chia seeds.

Keep it healthy until the end
Avoid sabotaging all of your hard work by smothering your muesli in sugar rich toppings like tinned fruits and flavoured yoghurts. Use fresh seasonal fruits, berries are great as they are low in fructose and you can save by buying frozen berries.

And always use a good quality Greek style natural yoghurt with no added sugars, these are full of friendly bacteria for your gut! The best brands are Jalna, Barambah Organics or Five AM Greek Yoghurts.
